Manage Roles and Access

The role and access system for organizations and apps allows for different levels of collaboration, access, and ownership. This guide explains the system and how to invite members, manage access levels, and transfer ownership.

Prerequisites

You must have a registered TikTok for Developers account
Your organization must be using the new role and access system (migrated or newly created organizations only; legacy organizations continue to use the basic role system)

Roles overview

The hierarchy of roles offers increasing levels of access across organizations, apps, or both.

App-level roles are independent across apps: the same account can have different roles for different apps, even if the apps belong to different organizations.

Organization-level and app-level management

You can manage roles from the organization page or the app page in the Developer Portal, depending on your needs:

Designate roles on the Developer Portal

Only higher-level roles can invite users to lower-level roles:

Organization owners can transfer ownership
Organization owners can invite organization admins and app managers
Organization admins can invite app managers

If the recipient does not respond to an invite within 24 hours, you can resend the invite.

Invite an organization admin

Note: Only the organization owner can invite organization admins.

On your organization page, navigate to the Roles & access page.
Click the Organization tab.
Click the Invite admin button.
Enter the recipient's email address (must be a registered TikTok for Developers account) then send the invite.

The recipient will receive an email and inbox notification on TikTok for Developers with the invite. They must accept the invite to join the organization.

Invite an app manager

You can invite an app manager from your organization page or a specific app page, depending on your needs.

To invite an app manager to multiple apps at once, use the organization page method:

On your organization page, go to the Roles & access page.
Go to the Apps tab on the sidebar.
Select your desired app from the dropdown menu.
Click the Invite app members button.
Enter the recipient's email address (must be a registered TikTok for Developers account) then send the invite.

To invite an app manager to a specific app or if limited by permissions, use the app page method:

On your app page, go to the Testing permissions page.
Go to the App members tab.
Click the Invite app managers button.
Enter the recipient's email address (must be a registered TikTok for Developers account) then send the invite.
Select App manager as the role then send the invite.

The recipient will receive an email and inbox notification on TikTok for Developers with the invite. They must accept the invite to join as an app manager.

Transfer organization ownership

To transfer organization ownership to another member, you must enter two transfer codes: one sent to your email address, and one sent to the email address of the person you want to transfer ownership to.

Note: Only the current organization owner can transfer ownership to another user. The new owner must not already be the owner of another organization.

On your organization page, navigate to the Roles & access page.
Click the Organization tab.
Find yourself in the user list and click the Transfer ownership button.
When prompted, enter your email address to receive a transfer code, then verify the transfer code.
Enter the email address of the person you want to transfer ownership to. They will receive a transfer code in their email that they must share with you. Verify their transfer code then click the Transfer button.

Once the transfer is complete, the new owner will receive a confirmation email and have full access to the organization and all its associated apps. You will be assigned an admin role in the organization.

Respond to role invites

When you are invited to join an organization or app, you will receive:

An email notification
An inbox notification in TikTok for Developers
A banner at the top of the TikTok for Developers site when you log in

You must accept the invite to access the organization or app with your assigned role. If you reject the invite, you will not be able to claim your assigned role unless the administrator resends the invite.

Leave an organization or app

If you no longer need access to an organization or app, you can leave voluntarily.

To leave an organization:

Go to the Roles and access tab of your organization page.
Find yourself in the organization members list and click the Leave organization button.

To leave an app:

Go to the Testing permissions page for the organization or app
Find your account in the app members list and click the Leave app button.

Your access will be removed immediately.
